If you’ve ever wandered the lush paths at Troy’s Tropics on Proctor Road, you might wonder: how did this little slice of paradise happen? Spoiler: it didn’t begin with a retail hub, a design studio, and full nursery operations. The unfolding of Troy’s Tropics Sarasota story started with one truck—and a landscaper who couldn’t stop growing things.

The Landscaper Who Knew His Plants (and His People)

In the early 1980s, before Sarasota’s suburbs were quite so polished, Troy was installing gardens along the Gulf Coast—one backyard at a time. Florida wasn’t easy on plants: scorching sun, salt air, and afternoon downpours that felt like monsoons. Troy kept a mental list of what thrived and what flopped, and a simple philosophy took root in what would become Troy’s Tropics Sarasota story:

Start with plants meant for Florida, and everything else gets easier.

Where it began: the nursery entrance that welcomed Sarasota gardeners looking for Florida-friendly plants.

1985: One Truck, a Few Greenhouses, and a Big Promise

That philosophy became reality in 1985, when Troy’s Tropics Nursery opened its doors. No marketing plan. No fancy website. Just a patch of land, some greenhouses, and a promise:

We’ll grow what works. We’ll tell you the truth. And we’ll treat you like a neighbor.

Turns out, that’s exactly what Sarasota gardeners wanted and needed to complete their local Troy’s Tropics Sarasota story.

The Nursery Grew—and So Did the Reputation

Word spread. If you wanted Florida-friendly plants and straight answers, you went to Troy’s. No gimmicks. No trends that wither by July. Just good plants and good people, key elements of Troy’s Tropics Sarasota story.

The Return to Roots: Design Comes Back

  • Local plants that actually fit our climate
  • Smart, layered layouts that grow in properly
  • A team that knows what thrives in your zip code

From one truck to a full-scale operation: expanded growing grounds and a faster, pro-friendly wholesale yard.

Then Came Maintenance, Lighting, and Irrigation

By 2020, the next question was, “Can you help me keep it looking this good?” Yes. Property Maintenance Programs launched—followed by Irrigation and Outdoor Lighting—handled by the same crew who designed and planted the space. One stop. No phone tag. No guesswork. All part of Troy’s Tropics Sarasota story.

A New Home Base on Proctor Road

In 2023, Troy’s Tropics moved into the former Albritton’s Nursery site on Proctor Road, transforming it into a true hub:

It’s the kind of place you swing by on a Saturday, pick a plumeria (or three), get solid advice, and leave with your car full of color.
