Why Troy's Tropics is Different: We Grow What We Install

For over 20 years, we’ve operated as both a full-service landscape design firm and a thriving local nursery. This isn’t a side business; it’s the core of our quality guarantee. By controlling the entire process from seedling to final installation, we deliver a superior landscape with total accountability.

Here’s what that actually means for you:

The Traditional Gamble The Troy’s Tropics Guarantee
Mystery Plants: Your designer picks from a catalog, hoping the plants that arrive are healthy and suitable. Hand-Selected & Locally-Grown: We hand pick local plants and what we’ve grown ourselves, right here in Sarasota’s soil, sun, and humidity. They are already acclimated and ready to thrive.
Third-Party Markup & Delays: You pay a premium for plants sourced by a middleman, and your project stalls waiting for their shipments. Wholesale Direct Value: You get healthier, superior plants for better value, installed on a predictable schedule without supply chain surprises.
The Blame Game: The designer blames the installer for planting errors; the installer blames the nursery for weak plants. You’re stuck in the middle. One Expert Team, Total Accountability: Our designers, growers, and installers are one team. We are fully responsible for the success of your project, from the first sketch to the final walkthrough.

Featured Project: The Siesta Key Sanctuary

Proof that our process works, even in the most challenging environments.

On a private peninsula on Siesta Key, we were tasked with restoring a storm-damaged 1950s waterfront home. The mission was clear: make it beautiful again, honor its history, and protect the precious living shoreline.

Challenge Our Solution
Storm-Damaged & Aging Landscape We strategically used larger, more mature plants from our nursery to restore the property’s scale and presence from day one.
Priceless Mature Trees We designed around the existing old-growth trees, using their canopy to create layered microclimates for a lush, tropical feel.
Fragile Waterfront We preserved and enhanced the existing living shoreline of mangroves and native plants, which is the property’s natural defense against storm surge and erosion.
The Result: A resilient, stunning waterfront sanctuary that feels original to the home. The client’s biggest goal was to “feel beautiful again—like it used to,” and by integrating our design expertise with our deep knowledge of coastal horticulture, we delivered.

Quality You Can See: Our Three-Step Plant Standard

Our reputation is built on the health and success of our plants. Every specimen we install, from the smallest annual to the grandest palm, has passed our rigorous three-step quality process at the nursery:

  • High-Quality Sourcing: We identify and collect only premium plant material from our own stock and a network of trusted partner growers.

  • Rigorous Inspection: When plant material enters our care, we meticulously inspect it for any signs of disease, pests, or stress. Only the strongest specimens are accepted.

  • Proprietary Treatment & Care: We use a proven, proprietary process to treat seasonal issues and apply preventative care, ensuring every plant is in peak condition before it leaves our nursery.

This obsession with quality is why we are renowned for our expertise and trusted with the garden care of numerous prestigious properties across the Gulf Coast.

What Our Clients Say

New Reasonable priceTroy’s Tropics did a full renovation of our yard including new shrubs, trees, irrigation system, lighting, and monthly maintenance. They have exceeded expectations in all regards.

- Ken Sklar

Troy’s Tropics team, spear-headed by Kyle K, their Landscape Manager, has been a communicative, creative and customer-service oriented partner in our association’s beautification projects. Highly responsive during our design development, bid process, installation and to our after-care questions, Kyle, his scheduler and his very professional, hard-working planting crew have gone the extra mile to help ensure our projects’ design integrity, on going viability and beauty.

- Colleen L. and Kathie W., Co-Chairs, Castel Del Mare Landscaping Committee

We added Landscaping and changes to the irrigation system. The plants were healthy and beautiful. The installation was top notch, including using premium compost top soil. They worked very closely with me to get the plantings installed to my satisfaction. Very professional job, they used all quality supplies. Planning on using them in the future.

- Jim Moynihan

We are so grateful for all of the wonderful specialists at Troys Tropics! We first used their service at our business to maintain plants we didn’t have time to care for. We then utilized their help in planting new landscaping at our home. Then..Hurricane Ian hit. We were displaced from our home for 4 months due to wind driven rain damage. Troys was there again to remove our landscaping while repairs were made to our home, then replaced all of the landscaping around the perimeter of our home. We completed our project last weekend with the installation of 26 beautiful areca palms in the backyard, finally enabling us to enjoy our home with a sense of privacy and Florida beauty. Troys also installed landscape lighting, which added to the beauty of this project. Everyone who helped us (Alex Handley, Kyle, and the entire crew at Troys) have given us a new sense of peace in our home now. We are blessed to have Troys Tropics help care for our property! Five stars-plus to Troys Tropics!Thank you all!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a "living shoreline," and why does it matter?

A living shoreline uses native plants like mangroves and sea grapes to stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and protect your property from storm surge. It’s a natural, resilient defense system that we specialize in preserving and enhancing as part of a responsible coastal design.

Do I have to remove my large, mature trees?

Absolutely not. In fact, we consider them a priceless asset. Mature trees create shade, structure, and unique microclimates that allow us to create far more interesting and layered designs. We always aim to design around and with your existing canopy.

How much does a landscape design project cost?

Project costs vary widely based on the size of your property, the complexity of the design, and the maturity of the plants you choose. We work with you to establish a clear budget during our initial On-Site Vision Session and design a plan to meet your financial goals, whether that means a phased installation or an all-in transformation.

How long does the process take?

From the initial consultation to the final walkthrough, most design and installation projects are completed within 4-8 weeks. We provide a clear timeline after the design is approved and are known for delivering on time and on schedule.

Why should I choose you over a designer who doesn't have a nursery?

Accountability and quality. Because we grow what we install, we have complete control over the health of your plants and the project timeline. There are no third-party markups, no supply chain surprises, and no finger-pointing if a plant fails. You get a healthier, more resilient landscape, often for a better value.

Do you design for HOAs and community associations?

Yes. We have extensive experience creating beautiful, HOA-compliant designs that meet community guidelines while reflecting your personal style.

Can you design hardscaping and outdoor living spaces?

Yes. Our design services include hardscape planning for patios, walkways, retaining walls, and other outdoor living elements to create a cohesive and functional space.

What styles of landscape design do you specialize in?

We specialize in a wide range of styles, including tropical, Mediterranean, English gardens, and native/pollinator gardens. We tailor the design to your home’s architecture and your personal aesthetic.
